How Much is Too Much Decorating for the Holidays? But I Love It, and I Can’t Stop!

The holidays are the one time of year when it’s acceptable, even encouraged, to go overboard with decorations. And let me tell you, I *love* decorating! From the trees to the lights, I can’t stop myself. It takes me weeks to get everything just right. But sometimes, as I stare at my house transformed into a winter wonderland, I wonder: how much is too much?

Let’s be honest: I probably have a tree in every room. A cozy little one in the kitchen, a grand showstopper in the living room, and don’t even get me started on the bathroom mini-tree. Lights, twinkling on banisters, across windows, and even along the yard's edges are given. I’ve got garlands, wreaths, ornaments, and festive tchotchkes strewn everywhere — and every inch has a purpose, even if it’s just to make me smile.

The whole process starts early. Way earlier than most would consider “normal.” The first weekend in November, I’m pulling out the boxes. I’ll admit it’s a bit of a production — but it’s a ritual that brings me joy. I’ve got a system: first, the trees. Then, lights. After that comes the fun stuff — stockings, garlands, and all the little sparkly details. By the time I'm done, I feel like I've transformed into an elf on a holiday binge.

But here’s the thing: I’ve come to realize that it’s not about going *too far* — it’s about the joy it brings me. The time, effort, creativity, and sheer fun are part of my celebration. Sure, it takes weeks to prepare, and some might look at it and think, “That’s a bit much,” but I wouldn’t change it for the world.

Now, the *real* fun begins when the holidays close. Because while I’m the one who gets the house, all decked out, the men in my house are the ones who love to take it all down and store it away in the basement. Our twin sons are always right there to help. One son, laughing, will say, “I think we can stop now,” as we finish putting away the last of the lights, while the other says, “I think it’s great!” Meanwhile, my 13-year-old son? Oh, he’s just rolling his eyes. He knows he will run up and down the stairs at least a hundred times, carrying ornaments and boxes. But there’s no fooling him — his main concern is which tree will have the gifts under it. That’s all he cares about!

But at the end of the day, we all love it—the decorating, the decorating madness, the chaos of lights and ornaments everywhere—and yes, the dreaded task of packing it all away. It’s all part of our holiday tradition. It brings us together, keeps us connected, and reminds us that it’s not about how much we decorate but the memories we create while doing it.

Ultimately, the holidays are about making memories and creating a unique and magical space. If it brings you happiness to go all out — whether it's a tree in every room or lights from floor to ceiling — then there’s no such thing as “too much.” You do you, and if your holiday décor makes you feel like you’re living in a festive dream, keep going!

After all, it’s only once a year, right? And what’s the point of the holidays if not to surround ourselves with the warmth and joy of the season — even if that means a bit of over-the-top sparkle? 🎄✨
