Emily in Paris

French Incorporation

Please tell me you have been watching Netflix’s new show Emily in Paris… If you have not, stop what you are doing and start now! I will wait… Now that you have seen it, isn’t it lovely? The first season premiered on October 2nd of this year. The show is created by Darren Star of Sex in the City fame. In an interview, Darren revealed he had studied French in college and – like many of us – used to imagine living in Paris as an adult. Now in his 50’s, he finally pulled the trigger by renting an apartment not far from the city’s famous Seine River a few years ago. While living there, he observed, reflected, and brainstormed this new show. He says, “I know how French people look at me, when they look at Americans, I can see some of their prejudices, and I can see some of my prejudices.” All of this he incorporated into the show.

New Chapter of Life

The show follows Emily, a twenty something marketing executive, living in Chicago at the beginning of the pilot episode. Out of the blue, she gets the chance to relocate to Paris to work for a marketing firm. She takes the new position and starts this new chapter of life with optimism, earnestness, and curiosity for the adventures ahead of her. Upon arrival though, we realize she speaks next to zero French, and at first, her bubbly personality is not well received by her new colleagues. However, through the course of the season, Emily meets friends and love interests that help her find her footing and accomplish her goals in her new home of Paris. Emily in Paris is a beautifully shot, romantic comedy, binge-worthy series that makes you believe in magic again.

Reminiscing

I had not heard anything about this show until it popped into my “Recommended for You” feed. Of course, I am immediately interested in anything with Paris in the title, but this show in particular stood out to me. Once I sat down and pressed play, I could not take my eyes off it. It makes me miss being in Paris so much! As soon as Emily gets out of the car where she will be staying, I jumped off the sofa and said, “OMG! That is my old street I lived on when I was in Paris.”. The show captures the food, the wine, and the atmosphere so perfectly. It even captures all of my favorite places I would go and my favorite walks I would take. The colors are delightful, the music is charming, and every single one of the characters feels honest and alive. Like all of Darren Star’s shows, the amazing fashion and style are next level when it comes to trendsetting. Prepare to see any one of the outfits in the show on next year’s runway!

Eiffel Tower Dreams

I watch this show over and over again in the background just for noise now. Every night, it calms me down. This show makes me feel connected to Paris, the city I love and miss so much. I remind my husband often I want to go back. Sometimes I think I am ready to make the move to Paris and make it my final home. I have not been able to visit Paris since COVID began and do not know when I will be able to in the future. Watching this show gives me hope I will return sooner rather than later and satisfies my Paris cravings for the moment. Above all else, it makes me excited for the day when I can board a plane and step off into that magical city once again, and see my beautiful Eiffel Tower sparkling once again with my very own eyes.
